Philip Brun Del Re (he/him) is an artist and designer based in San Diego, California. Primarily, his visual artwork is a dialog with found objects, images, and texts. Philip’s artwork ranges broadly in form, from bold graphic prints and paintings to experiential sculpture and installation.
His practice questions ubiquitous source materials through the process of physical and conceptual deconstruction / reconstruction. He does this by co-opting hegemonic forms of communication: subverting and satirizing the language and symbols involved in signage, directives, slogans, and branding. By adapting their formal elements and context he mines the power they hold as symbols, to change their narratives and reorient their meanings.
Informed by day jobs as an art handler and preparator, his art explores the connection that cycles of labor and exertion have to habits of consumption and accumulation. After a shocking health emergency in 2022, Philip has incorporated themes of physical, mental, and spiritual health and wellbeing.
Currently, Philip an MFA candidate at San Diego State University’s School of Art & Design. Since 2023 he has collaborated on a series of risograph and letterpress print editions with Burn All Books and Athenaeum Art Center respectively. Beginning in April 2023 he has contributed to Burn All Books’ Mail Mag, a monthly subscription of printed matter. Contributions have included both limited editions and designing / editing Art Splotch, a monthly list of San Diego based art events. Most recently, in 2024 he began hosting Radical Movements, a bimonthly music program for the independent, community radio station Particle FM.
