Matthew Bacher is a practicing painter who works with themes of the body. He moved to San Diego from New York City in 2014. While continuing his art education he transitioned from his work as a tattoo artist to using paint on canvas as his primary medium. The transition was one of working on the body to one of examining the body in its many environments. Bacher has been deeply inspired by San Diego’s vast biodiversity and scenery. He has participated in artist residencies at Arts Letters and Numbers and Signal Fire, where he examined the body (specifically his own) in a variety of landscapes, while making paintings, performance and social practice. His work is encouraged by theory and the pursuit of questioning.
